An independent coffee brand. Roasted in Bend, Oregon. Nothing on the box we cannot back up.
Purelight started with a Keurig and a grudge. The machine was fine. The pods were not: old commodity coffee, roasted dark to hide it, sitting in a warehouse until someone bought it. The question was whether specialty-grade coffee could go into the same pod, and the same bag, and the same trailhead tub, at the same standard. It can. That is the whole company.
Who we are
Purelight was founded by a business student in British Columbia and ships to customers across the United States. It is not a roastery and does not pretend to be one. The coffee is sourced and roasted by our roasting partner in Bend, Oregon, a specialty roaster that roasts to order, publishes independent lab results and cups every coffee it sells. We chose them for exactly those three reasons, and every coffee in the lineup was tasted by the founder before it went on the site.
What specialty grade means here
Specialty grade is a number, not an adjective. Every bag and pod we sell cupped between 83 and 87.5 on the SCA 100-point scale, and that score is printed on the product page next to the altitude, the processing and the varietals. The scores come from our roasting partner, and we say so. If a coffee does not have a score, we do not invent one. Our instant coffee and our matcha carry origin and processing details but no number.
Tested, and the report is real
Our roasting partner sends its coffee to FoodChain ID, an independent laboratory, for heavy metals, mycotoxins, mold and yeast. The most recent report found nothing above the detection limit. It is a single report for the roaster's coffee, not one per bag, and we describe it that way.
Roasted to order, shipped within days
Nothing sits waiting for you to order it. Coffee is roasted in small batches in Bend and ships an average of four days after the roast. The dark roasts come off between 415 and 417°F, before the sugars turn to carbon, which is why they taste like cocoa instead of ash. The roast profiles on our product pages are representative sample batches, not the batch in your box, and we label them that way.
What we will not say
We will not name a farm we cannot verify. We will not claim a roast date we cannot print. We will not call a coffee tested if the report does not cover it. If you find a claim on this site that does not hold up, write to us and we will fix it or take it down.
